Day of Prayer for Victims and Survivors of Abuses

Irish and Polish dioceses observe the Day of Prayer for Survivors and Victims of Sexual Abuse on the first Friday of Lent, which this year is March 7. This day was established in 2016 by the Vatican’s Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, following a suggestion from a survivor of clerical abuse. Pope Francis asked Bishops’ Conferences worldwide to select a day for this prayer initiative, leading Ireland and Poland to choose the first Friday of Lent.

Since 2017, Ireland has commemorated this day by lighting “Candles of Atonement” in parishes. These blessed candles symbolize atonement and hope in the face of darkness and were inspired by Pope Francis’ visit to Dublin in 2018 when he sought God’s mercy for abuse crimes.

In Poland, the Day of Prayer is guided by a Gospel message, with Archbishop Wojciech Polak encouraging people to express solidarity with victims. Certain churches will host prayers for those affected, promoting healing and support. The Church in Poland also shares reflections on the Stations of the Cross and testimonies from survivors. The Pontifical Commission invites all to join this public prayer, highlighting its importance for raising awareness, protecting minors, and preventing future abuse.
