For Jubilee of Deacons, 4,000 in Rome

From February 21 to 23, the fourth major event of the Jubilee of Hope is taking place in Rome, where 4,000 deacons from over a hundred countries will meet. They will pass through the Holy Door and attend various meetings, concluding with a Holy Mass on February 23 at St. Peter’s Basilica led by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization.

The term “deacon” means “servant,” reflecting their role. Although Pope Francis, known as the “Servant of the Servants of God,” is in the hospital and unable to attend, the event will start on February 21 with prayers and discussions on “Concrete signs of hope in diaconal ministry.” Participants will pass through the Holy Door on Saturday for a plenary indulgence and attend a conference on deacons’ roles.

Sunday will feature the ordination of 23 deacons during Mass. The event is seen as a moment for faith strengthening and outreach, with hopes for renewal and charity among the deacons and their families.
