Nigerian Journalists are Called upon to Uncover All Occurrences of Christian Persecution

The vice chancellor of Nigeria’s Veritas University, Father Hyacinth Ementa Ichoku, has insisted journalists to highlight the increasing persecution of Christians in Nigeria. In an interview, he emphasized that persecution has always been a part of Christian history and is not only about violence but also includes denying individuals their rights based on their beliefs. Examples of this subtle oppression include being denied job promotions or access to land for churches.

Ichoku warned that when the government systematically targets people for their faith, it leads to serious injustice. He stressed the importance of media in exposing these issues and called on Christian journalists to use their platform to advocate against discrimination and persecution. He pointed out the perceived favoritism toward Islamic practices in the Nigerian governance system, specifically criticizing the use of public funds for Sharia law while Christians lack equivalent legal systems.

He proposed that Christians should advocate for the recognition of canon law as an official legal framework, highlighting that it predates Sharia law. Ichoku also called for unity among Christians to resist ongoing oppression, stating that complacency will only allow persecution to worsen. He emphasized the need for a united voice to challenge the imposition of Sharia law and ensure Christians defend their rights.

Additionally, Ichoku addressed misconceptions about the Catholic engagement with Scripture, encouraging Catholics to read the Bible daily for spiritual nourishment while also recognizing the need for greater personal devotion outside of church services.
