Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal George Koovakad as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue. Cardinal Koovakad expressed both gratitude and nervousness about taking over this significant role, succeeding Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot and Cardinal Tauran, individuals he respects greatly. He will continue his work as an organizer of the Pope’s Apostolic Journeys, where he aims to foster peaceful relations among different religions.
In discussing his new position, Cardinal Koovakad highlighted the importance of interfaith dialogue, rooted in his upbringing in a diverse community in India. He emphasized that interreligious dialogue should focus on mutual respect, understanding, and building connections rather than creating divisions. He pointed out that Christian faith embraces cultural differences and advocates for fraternity among all people.
Regarding the relationship with Islam, Cardinal Koovakad noted the progress made since the Second Vatican Council, highlighting previous papal gestures, including those by St. Paul VI and Pope Francis, aimed at fostering interfaith relationships. He mentioned the importance of actions during papal visits that bring together different faith communities, such as the significant visits to Abu Dhabi and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.
Cardinal Koovakad also shared insights from his experience organizing the Pope’s Apostolic Journeys, which often include interreligious elements. One example was the recent visit to Asia and Oceania, where Pope Francis celebrated the “Friendship Tunnel” connecting a mosque and a cathedral in Jakarta. Although a planned visit to Dubai for COP28 on climate change was canceled due to the Pope’s health, the preparations involved close collaboration with Muslim authorities.
The Cardinal looks forward to drawing on his extensive experiences from various assignments, including his roles in Algeria, South Korea, and Iran, to fulfill his new responsibilities. He is hopeful that his previous work in organizing papal visits will be beneficial in his role with the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, as he aims to continue the mission of promoting coexistence and understanding among diverse faiths.
