Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, the President of the Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference, has urged the Christian community and the whole society to reject the path of revenge and instead embrace forgiveness, love, and understanding. This message is directed towards citizens, encouraging them to resist the urge for retribution in the face of profound loss. The Cardinal denounced the violent killings, describing the cold-blooded murder of innocent South Sudanese individuals as a “heinous act rooted in hatred and oppression.” He emphasized that the violence inflicted upon South Sudanese is driven by oppressive regimes and systems that dehumanize people based on their ethnicity, beliefs, or political affiliations. Christian message is founded on the principles of love, forgiveness, and understanding that Christ imparts to us. While the feelings of pain and anger are entirely valid, we urge you to avoid seeking revenge against Sudanese refugees residing in our country.
The Cardinal articulated his apprehension regarding the notion of revenge, emphasizing that it exacerbates conflict and animosity. He stated, “Revenge merely leads to further violence and anguish, intensifying the cycles of hatred that entrap us.” He urged that we should instead extend our hands in solidarity to those who have sought refuge among us, acknowledging their struggles as integral to our collective human experience.
Cardinal Mulla conveyed his gratitude for the unity displayed within the South Sudanese community and assured the bereaved families of his prayers during their time of mourning.
