Saint Ursula is a legendary Romano- British Christian saint. She is the patron saint of Cologne, England, Gozo, archers, orphans, female students, Binangonan and Rizal. The stories told about Ursula and her companions are legendary. It reads: In the 4th century, Ursula, born into a royal family in England, was forced to be betrothed by her father to a non – Christian king. The princess, on the other hand, took three years to get married and set sail in 11 ships with her 10 best friends, the virgins and many maids.
They traveled a long way across the ocean. One day, almost three years later, the ships were swept away by a storm and reached the mouth of the River Rhine. From there it moved to Cologne and later to Bailey. When they saw a safe harbor at Bel, they disembarked from their ships. She crossed the Alps and went to Rome to visit the tombs of the apostles and pray. The same way they came back to Cologne.
At that moment, they fell into the hands of the Huns, who were deeply hostile to the Christians. The general was fascinated by Ursula’s beauty and wanted to marry her. She and her companions could have saved their lives if they had agreed to the marriage. But she was not ready for it and said, “I am the bride of Christ; I love death rather than desecration.”
The enraged general immediately killed her and her friends. The Christians properly buried the bodies of the virgins and built a church there to preserve their memory.
