On 29 December, Cardinal Baldassare Reina, the Vicar General of His Holiness for the Diocese of Rome, opened the Holy Door of the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the Pope’s cathedral, as part of the Jubilee 2025. This ceremony marked the third Holy Door to be opened in the Diocese of Rome, following those at St. Peter’s Basilica and the Rebibbia prison.
During the ceremony, Cardinal Reina reflected on the parable of the “prodigal son,” emphasizing God’s merciful and embracing nature. He noted that regardless of our past mistakes or distances from God, we will always find an open door and a welcoming embrace when we choose to return. The Cardinal encouraged those present to respond to God’s grace with open hearts, allowing themselves to be reconciled and restored by God’s mercy.
As the Holy Door was opened, Cardinal Reina invited the faithful to cross the threshold, symbolizing their willingness to receive God’s embracing mercy and to build authentic relationships with others. The ceremony was a powerful reminder of God’s love and mercy, and the opportunity for spiritual renewal and growth offered by the Jubilee 2025.
