The Catholic Church in Mexico is grieving the tragic loss of two minor brothers, shot dead on 9 November near Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Entabladero, Veracruz state. The victims, who were altar boys and actively involved in the parish, were killed in a nearby plaza, according to Father Lorenzo Rivas Fuentes, spokesman for the Diocese of Papantla.
Veracruz Attorney General Verónica Hernández Giadáns has assured that authorities are working diligently to determine the facts and apprehend those responsible, promising “no impunity” for the perpetrators.
Local media reported that one brother was an altar boy, while the other helped his mother with church cleaning duties. Father Rivas confirmed that one brother had served as an altar boy for years, and the other was part of a parish youth group.
The mother of the deceased had been responsible for preparing meals for the priest until recently.
The Diocese has urged authorities to conduct thorough investigations and called on the faithful to pray for peace, the eternal rest of the victims, and comfort for their families.
This tragic incident highlights the escalating violence in Mexico, where the Catholic Church has been a frequent target. The Catholic Multimedia Center reports ongoing attacks on churches and clergy, underscoring the need for continued prayer and support.
