Next Sunday, November 17, the Vatican will celebrate the eighth edition of the World Day of the Poor, an initiative launched by Pope Francis in 2017. This year’s theme, “The prayer of the poor rises up to God,” highlights the special place the poor hold in God’s heart.
To mark this occasion, Pope Francis will preside over the Eucharist in St. Peter’s Basilica at 10:00 am. During the ceremony, he will bless 13 keys representing the countries where housing for disadvantaged people will be built through the Famvin Homeless Alliance (FHA). This initiative, supported by the Vincentian Family, aims to address homelessness globally.
One of the beneficiary countries is Syria, with the Holy See financing the construction of homes as an act of charity for the Holy Year. Following the Eucharist, Pope Francis will share lunch with 1,300 poor people in the Paul VI Hall, courtesy of the Italian Red Cross.
Each participant will also receive a backpack containing food and hygiene products, donated by the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentian Fathers). This gesture embodies the spirit of the World Day of the Poor, encouraging a culture of sharing and compassion.
The event reflects Pope Francis’ commitment to serving the most vulnerable and living the essence of the Gospel. As he established in his Apostolic Letter Misericordia et Misera, the World Day of the Poor invites everyone to reject the throwaway culture and seek meaningful encounters with those in need.
