Pope Francis has issued a chirograph, dated October 29, ordering the relocation of part of the Vatican Apostolic Archives and the Apostolic Library to the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary. The move aims to optimize the management and conservation of the archives.
The Pope highlighted the centuries-long dedication of the Vatican Archives and Library to preserving documents related to the universal Church’s governance and promoting culture. To enhance this mission, Francis has decreed the expansion of spaces, utilizing part of the seminary’s building and surroundings.
The collaboration between the Vatican Archives, Library, and Roman Major Seminary will facilitate the orderly execution of their work, adhering to existing provisions and guidelines. A commission, comprising representatives from the Secretariat of State, Vatican Apostolic Archives, and Vatican Library, will determine which documents will be transferred.
This decision reflects Pope Francis’ commitment to efficient resource management and cultural preservation. The relocated archives will continue to serve the Church and the cultural community, upholding the See of Peter’s legacy.
