Daily Gospel: Faith Fermentation

15 OCTOBER 2021 LUKE 12:1-7

FRIDAY OF THE 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

FAITH FERMENTATION

Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy (Luke 12:1).

Jesus uses the metaphor of leaven both in positive and negative contexts. The positive context focuses on the process of “fermentation”, the leaven of a little faith is enough to lift up/ ferment our whole life to God or the leaven of few Christians living by faith are enough to transform/ ferment the moral and spiritual life of the whole society.

The negative sense focuses on “contamination” or malicious fermentation and a little hypocrisy is enough to decay the foundations of our spiritual life because it corrupts from within. Jesus warns his listeners, just as evil happened through Pharisees at the time of Jesus, sometimes contamination happens through Church’s own leaders and allies because of their selfish motives.

In contrast to the hypocrisy of the world, Jesus’ disciples are supposed to practice transparency and accountability in life, especially matters pertaining to the soul and church life- the mystical body of Christ. Amen.
