Catholic Journalist Murdered in DRC Eulogized as ‘man of peace’

Catholic journalist Edmond Bahati Mbarushimana was tragically murdered on 27 September in the Ndosho district of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. He was shot at close range while heading home from work. Bishop Willy Ngumbi Ngengele remembered Bahati as a “man of peace, a self-effacing man and a faithful servant” during his funeral mass at St. Joseph Cathedral on 1 October.

The bishop expressed his difficulty in understanding why someone like Bahati would be murdered, emphasizing the importance of seeking solace in faith rather than answers to every question. Authorities have arrested 35 individuals, including the alleged killers, in connection with the murder. One suspect confessed to being paid just $5 to carry out the crime.

Bishop Ngumbi urged the local authorities to provide more clarity on the case and encouraged the faithful to pray for the conversion of the murderers, rather than harbouring hatred or seeking revenge. Father Adeodatus Muhigi, editor-in-chief of Radio Maria Goma, described Bahati as a dynamic and dedicated individual who was deeply committed to his faith and the radio station’s mission.

Bahati leaves behind a wife and three young children, with the youngest only 10 days old. He was laid to rest in his hometown of Rutshuru. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by journalists and individuals in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where violence and terrorism continue to threaten the safety and well-being of citizens
