Saint Jerome Emiliani’s life is a powerful testament to the transformation of life and dedication to serving others. Born in Venice, Jerome was initially a careless and irreligious soldier, but his life took a dramatic turn when he was captured in a skirmish and imprisoned in a dungeon. During his time in prison, Jerome had ample opportunities to reflect on his life and gradually became convinced of the value of prayer.
After having been released from prison, Jerome returned to Venice and took on the responsibility of educating his nephews. This experience sparked a desire in him to pursue a life of service and spirituality, which led him to start his studies for the priesthood. Following his ordination, Jerome’s life was marked by a series of events that called him to make significant decisions and adopt a new lifestyle.
When the plague and famine swept through northern Italy, Jerome responded by caring for the sick and feeding the hungry from his earnings. As he served the sick and the poor, he felt called to devote his life and his property solely to the service of others, especially the abandoned children. This led him to establish three orphanages, a shelter for repentant prostitutes, and a hospital.
In 1532, Jerome, together with two other priests, co-founded the Clerks Regular of Somasca, a congregation dedicated to the care of orphans and the education of the youth. Through his tireless efforts, Jerome demonstrated his commitment to serving the most vulnerable members of society.
Tragically, Jerome’s life was cut short when he contracted a disease while tending to the sick in 1537. However, his legacy lived on, and he was canonized in 1767. In 1928, Pope Pius XI named him the patron saint of orphans and abandoned children, recognizing his tireless efforts on their behalf.
Today, Saint Jerome Emiliani’s feast day is celebrated on 8 February, together with that of Saint Josephine Bakhita. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have on the lives of others and of the importance of dedicating oneself to serving those in need.
