The Chaldean bishops of Iraq have expressed deep concern over the war in Gaza, calling for a two-state solution as the only path to lasting peace. In a statement issued at the end of their annual Synod in Baghdad, the bishops condemned all forms of violence and urged the international community to take immediate action to end the devastating war.
The bishops reaffirmed their support for a two-state solution, where Israel and Palestine can coexist “in peace, security, stability, and mutual trust.” This stance is also advocated by the Holy See but opposed by the current Israeli government.
The statement also highlighted the struggles of Christian communities in the region, particularly in Iraq, where they have faced marginalization, exclusion, and seizure of properties. The bishops called on the Iraqi government to ensure equal rights for all citizens and to protect Christian communities.
Additionally, the Synod expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani for recognizing Cardinal Raphael Sako as the head of the Chaldean Catholic Church. The bishops also emphasized the need for unity and solidarity among Christians in the region, stating that “unity is our strength and salvation.
