The Divine Pearls of Alphonsa: Day 15

Never hurt any with our words.

“We must be cautious in the use of words, even more than a miser would do with his money.” St. Alphonsa

Words have tremendous power to influence, persuade, and even harm, so using them wisely and carefully is essential. St. Alphonsa was known for her gentle and kind words. She avoided harsh or hurtful language, always speaking with compassion and understanding. Before speaking, she would carefully consider her words, ensuring that what she said was truthful and edifying. This reflective approach helped her avoid causing unnecessary harm or misunderstanding. The following incident will enlighten how her gentle behavior and careful use of words exemplify our spiritual Journey.

In August 1939, during the annual retreat at the convent, Alphonsa was very tired. A sister who did not like her met the retreat preacher, talked to him, and said, “Father, why do you bring holy communion to Alphonsa in her room?” She has the health to get up and come to chapel. It is all an attempt to catch the love and attention of others. If she feels good, there is good enthusiasm for the day…! There is nothing wrong with her, so please go and talk to her. The next day, the father went to Alphonsa’s room as he obtained the permission of her mother superior. He asked Alphonsa Can’t you come to the chapel and participate in Mass if you feel like it? If you avoid your lazy nature, you can do more good things. This can be a kind of temptation or a desire to capture the love and attention of others. I am not forcing you, sister; give it a try… Father gave his blessing.
Alphonsa’s eyes filled with tears. She looked at the retreat preacher and said the praise to be Jesus Christ. Peacher left the room. She did not tell anyone about this. “My good Jesus weighs and gives me everything. He is looking at me so as not to tire me. I will not tire… Just fill me with your love.” “If riches are a desirable possession in life, what is richer than wisdom who effects all things? And if understanding is effective, who more than she is fashioner of what exists? And if any one loves righteousness, her labors are virtues; for she teaches self-control and prudence, justice and courage; nothing in life is more profitable for men than these. (Wisdom 8:5-7). She was comforted by these words. Before finishing the retreat, Father came to Alphonsa’s room and said: “Sr Alphonsa, I misunderstood you and said something against you. All the other sisters have only good opinions about you. You did not commit any mistake. You are a saint, a paragon of forgiveness.”

St. Alphonsa’s wisdom in speech was not just a personal virtue but a transformative force in her surroundings. Her careful choice of words, guided by prudence, averted unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings, fostering an environment of peace and understanding. Let us draw inspiration from her life and strive to emulate her, ensuring that our words and actions do not cause harm.
