The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith has issued a ruling on the alleged apparitions of Our Lady of the Rock, confirming the “nihil obstat” proposed by Bishop Francesco Oliva of Locri-Gerace. This decision acknowledges the spiritual fruits and experiences associated with the shrine but does not imply approval of the supernatural character of the phenomenon.
Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery, emphasized the significance of the shrine as a powerful sign of faith in a secularized world. He encouraged the diocesan Bishop to appreciate the pastoral value and promote the spread of this spiritual proposal, including through pilgrimages and prayer meetings.
The alleged apparitions began in 1968, when Cosimo Fragomeni, a young farmer, reported seeing the Virgin Mary. The site of the apparition has since become a popular destination for pilgrims, and the construction of a large shrine has been undertaken.
The Dicastery’s ruling emphasizes the importance of correct veneration of Mary, in a clear Christological perspective, and encourages a renewed proclamation of the kerygma to enlighten and enrich this experience of the Spirit.
The faithful are authorized to participate in the devotion in a prudent manner but are not obliged to believe in the supernatural character of the phenomenon. Any further messages will be made public only after the Bishop’s judgment.
A solemn celebration is scheduled at the shrine on August 5, and the faithful are invited to attend.
