In the heart-wrenching account, Sister Liji, a nun from Kerala, India, and doing ministry in Ukraine, shares the horrors of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. The recent attack on the children’s hospital in Kyiv, which left many young lives massacred and many scarred forever, has shaken the world.
“What cruelty to those children who didn’t know anything?” Sister Liji asks, her voice trembling with emotion. “Daily, at least 20 rockets fall from Russia to Ukraine, some days even over a hundred. The attack on the children’s hospital was particularly painful, as it is the premier hospital in the country, treating over 20,000 children, including those with serious illness.”
Sister Liji has witnessed the devastation first-hand, visiting hospitals and comforting the victims of war. “In one clinic alone, around 5,000 men are receiving treatment for amputation. The long line of those who have lost hands, feet, and eyes is painful to watch. How can a single person comfort them all?” she asks, helplessly.
The war has claimed countless lives, with over 500 people dying per day. The country is struggling to cope with the crisis, with the power plants being attacked, leaving Ukraine without electricity for 10-12 hours a day. For them, the future looks bleak, with no end in sight to the atrocities.
Sister Liji’s plea is simple: “Will Russia end this brutality? Will this country get justice? We need prayers for Ukraine.” As the world watches, Ukraine’s cry for peace and justice continues; and a reminder of the devastating cost of a war.
