Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the envoy of Pope Francis, was received this Thursday, September 14, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China by Li Hui, Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs.
According to a note from the Vatican Press Office, “the meeting, which took place in an open and cordial atmosphere, was dedicated to the war in Ukraine and its dramatic consequences, underscoring the need to join forces to foster dialogue and find ways forward.” that lead to peace.”
“The problem of food security was also addressed, with the hope that the export of cereals can soon be guaranteed, especially to countries with the most risks,” the Vatican reported.
Cardinal Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), visits the capital of China from September 13 to 15, together with an Official from the Vatican Secretariat of State.
“The visit constitutes another stage of the mission promoted by the Pope to support humanitarian initiatives and the search for paths that can lead to a just peace,” says a Vatican statement published on 12 September.
This trip comes after the Holy Father’s envoy visited Kyiv and Moscow in June and traveled to Washington the following month as part of the Vatican’s efforts to facilitate a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.
Pope Francis has promoted this initiative in the hope of putting an end to the tragic situation that has affected Ukraine, due to the Russian invasion, which began on 24 February 2022.
