Maintain the Mental Health of the Kids on Summer Vacation

Summer vacation is usually a time for relaxation. Most kids look forward to the summer vacation for a break from their routine school days. Children who suffer from mental disorders, such as anxiety or depression, may feel that the summer break has taken away their “safety” of the school routine. These kids may actually experience increased anxiety when the summer break begins.

Parents too struggle as they have to balance their work with the care of their kids and keep them happy providing them with the sense of fulfillment they require.

Here’re a few strategies that might help the families to keep the kids providing their mental health a top priority during summer break:

  1. Create a Structure through Schedules

Most kids thrive with routine, particularly kids with mental disorders. The key is consistency — for example, keep the same routine for waking up and bedtime. You can schedule an online call every week with the family members, or coordinate a date each week for playing with their friends.

  1. Plan Fun Activities

Parents should spend time with their kids, and they can also plan for some activities. Kids may be inclined to be anxious or depressed as they miss their peer group at school. Children who love to read can enjoy summer reading programs, usually provided for free at local libraries. It can be as simple as planning activities for the family, such as a weekly game night or a barbecue.

  1. Outings

Going out can give them the opportunity for physical activities. Going for a bike ride in the evening, swimming, or just a walk around the block can help kids feel more cheerful. Getting out of the house also limits T.V. screen time. Children should turn off the screen for a while and enjoy the sunshine instead.

  1. Family Time

Most parents rarely have a break during summer, while kids have a vacation. Many parents can’t get time off during the summer. No need of taking off for a month to give them quality family time. You can make a strategy just doing everyday things together, such as cooking or a family movie night, which can make a difference to kids.

  1. Find a Balance

Parents should make sure that they do not over burden the kids during that time. Many of the kids are forced to attend various training programs. While it’s good to find some fun for the kids, it’s also important for them to be able to relax and enjoy some downtime. The key is to find a balance between too much and too little. Learning how to balance work and play is a skill children can use throughout their lifetime. Hence, parents should understand that it will refresh and rejuvenate their minds and body.
