Worry is a primary cognitive characteristic of anxiety, and has been described as ‘a chain of thoughts and images, negatively affect-laden and relatively uncontrollable’. It is good to know some strategies to overcome your worries and anxieties.
Self-Talk: This can be a better technique you can try saying things to yourself things like, “I’m okay. I’m here and safe in the present moment. Nothing can hurt me right now.” It can even be helpful to say your name, the city and place you’re at, and the date and time to redirect you to the here and now and remind yourself that you are safe.
Meditation: You can listen to good spiritual talks that can lead to calm your mind. You can find many free ones on the internet. Again, finding the ones that work for you can take some trial and error. Try out different types of guided meditation and follow the apt ones for you.
Music: Music has the power to heal your pain. Especially innermost pain. Listen to music you find soothing. You can make a playlist of songs that are calming and name the playlist something to remind you to use it in these moments (e.g., I created a playlist for myself called “Breathe” that I use!)
Pets: If you have a pet, sit with them and focus on how they feel to the touch. Notice their physical markings or unique characteristics.
Visualize: Picture the places that are comforting you. Think of your favorite place and imagine that you are there now. Use each of your senses – picture what you see, the noises you hear, the scents you smell.
