Benedict XVI will be Buried in Vatican Crypt

The Vatican announced the burial place of Benedict XVI on Saturday afternoon. Pope Emeritus will be buried in the crypt under St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Vatican crypt is close to the remains of the Catholic Church’s first pope, St. Peter the Apostle.

No official visits or public prayers are planned yet though the remains of Benedict XVI will stay at Mater Ecclesiae Monastery until 2 January 2022, the Vatican said.

The funeral Mass on 5 January 2023, will occur at 9:30 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square. Attendance is free and requires no reservation.
