Pope Francis suffered two episodes of acute respiratory failure on Monday, experiencing severe difficulty breathing due to a significant accumulation of mucus in the bronchi. The obstruction caused a bronchospasm, leading to a narrowing of the bronchi.
According to the Vatican’s medical report, the Pope underwent two bronchoscopies to diagnose and treat the lung condition, as well as an aspiration of abundant secretions. Non-invasive mechanical ventilation was also resumed to assist with his breathing.
The Vatican confirmed that the Pope’s condition remains complex and that these episodes are a consequence of bilateral pneumonia and a lung reaction to bacteria, rather than a new infection. The prognosis remains reserved, and the Pope remains vigilant and collaborative with his medical team.
