3 Million People in Urgent Need of Help in Myanmar: Greatest Humanitarian Crisis in the Country

Myanmar’s humanitarian crisis has deepened since the February 1 military coup. The United Nations Country team is concerned about the country and its greatest humanitarian crisis. Around three million people are in need of help and the release of 5600 prisoners under an unusual amnesty again gives the strongest proof for the crisis of the country.

“According to humanitarians some three million women, children and men urgently need life-saving assistance and protection due to conflict, food insecurity, natural disasters and covid-19. This includes one million people who were in need at the start of the year, plus an additional two million people identified as needing help after the military takeover on February 1,” said Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary General. The recent wave of Covid- 19 also worsened the situation of the people.

The seven staff members of Caritas were arrested on Monday by the Military junta in Loikaw in the eastern state of Kaya. They were on the way to deliver humanitarian aid to the displaced people. Two of their vehicles are also seized.
